Adventure ~ Distance ~ Goals ~ Altitude

If you live in the City of San Diego, this is a great get away for hiking, running or biking or even horseback riding. The Los Penasquito Canyon Preserve is a long canyon that runs between the 5 freeway and the 15 freeway near Sorrento Valley Blvd. It used to serve as an old ranch in the late 1800s and you can see why once you get into the canyon.

There are trailheads on both the west side and the east slide as well as access points on the north and south canyon rims. Our favorite is the parking trailhead on the west side.

In the spring the canyon is full of green meadows and until mid summer, a nice creek runs with a set of small waterfalls, The trail is wide and well maintained and is popular during the day and weekends. The trail is generally easy to moderate and runs about 5-6 miles in length. From the west trailhead, the waters falls are about 3 miles in making it a pleasant 6 mile round trip.
